The wild pitch allowed Mitchell to score, tying the game, and moved Knight to second base. Mitchell and Knight, and Gary Carter who had scored the 4th run, had each gotten two-out singles after Boston had scored two runs in the top of the tenth to go ahead 5-3. Wilson fouled off two more pitches and then hit a slow grounder to Red Sox first baseman BILL BUCKNER, playing well behind the bag. The speedy Wilson most probably would have been safe anyway, but Buckner, trying to watch the ball and the runner at the same time, let the ball go between his legs into right field, allowing Knight to score the winning run.
