BILL ROBINSON
Bojangles inscribes a small black and white publicity photograph of
himself taping for a collector.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "Just a few/'Taps' for/Ralph
Botsford/With best/Wishes/Bill Robinson/1941". B/w, 4¾x6¾ overall, image
4¼x6 (one surface). Bill "Bojangles" Robinson gained great success as a
nightclub and musical comedy performer and for 25 years was one of the toasts of
Broadway. Not until he was fifty (1928) did he dance for white
audiences, having devoted his early career exclusively to appearances on the
Black theater circuit. As Walker the butler, he performed a magnificent
stair-dance duet with Shirley Temple in The Little Colonel (1935). In
1939 he returned to the stage in The Hot Mikado, a jazz version of the
Gilbert and Sullivan operetta. Produced at the 1939-1940 New York World's Fair,
it was one of the greatest hits of the fair. Light surface crease in upper right
blank background. Tiny stain in upper right background above image. Nicked in
bottom right blank margin. Overall, fine condition.
