BILL CUNNINGHAM
Typed letter apologizing for a misprint in his Boston Herald
Typed Letter signed: "Bill Cunningham", 1 page, 8x8 page, affixed at an 8½x11 page (2 surfaces). Boston, Massachusetts, 1949 February 14. On letterhead of the Boston Herald and Boston Traveler to Mrs. Fred Mullock, Melrose, Massachusetts. In full: "Your postcard of yesterday has been referred to me for attention. Needless to say, I am sincerely sorry for the typographical mess in last Sunday's Herald, and I am most appreciative of your continued interest. Here is a reprint of the column which is more readable, I think. Cordially". BILL CUNNINGHAM, who played football at Dartmouth, became a popular Boston sports columnist and radio commentator. In 1941, the Boston Herald hired him away from the competing Boston Post with a salary which, according to Time magazine, made him the highest paid sports writer in the US. Herald subscriptions promptly jumped by enough to pay his salary. From the collection Ralph Errington Ward (1926-2009) a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II. Ward became President and CEO of Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home product conglomerate. Toned from adhesive residue show through. Multiple mailing folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
