BILL DANA
Signing as himself and as his well-known character, "José"
Signature: "Bill Dana/José", 5x3. Bill Dana, born William
Szathmary in 1924, was a decorated infantryman in World War II. A head writer
for The Steve Allen Show, Dana (of Hungarian Jewish ancestry) portrayed a
Hispanic character, José Jimenez, on that and many other shows (including 17
appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show) over the next decade. He took the
Jimenez character to his own TV show, The Bill Dana Show (1963-1965).
His record, "José the Astronaut" proved popular with
the real astronauts. The first words spoken to an American in space (from Deke
Slayton to Alan Shepard) were, "OK, José, you're on
your way." Although Dana stopped performing as Jimenez in 1970, believing the
character might offend ethnic sensitivities, he received an Image Award in
1997 from the National Hispanic Media Coalition. Dana continued to write and
perform for another quarter century, however. His Emmy-winning episode of
All in the Family, "Sammy David Jr. Visits Archie Bunker", ranks #12 on
the TV Guide list of top 100 TV episodes. He had a recurring role on
The Golden Girls (1988-1991). Corners lightly worn and creased. Lightly
toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
