BILL DANA
TV writer and comedian famed for his José
Jimenez character, Dana draws himself
Self Caricature signed:"Bill Dana", 5x3 index card with
caricature to the left of signature. Bill Dana, born William Szathmary in
1924, was a decorated infantryman in World War II. A head writer for The
Steve Allen Show, Dana (of Hungarian Jewish ancestry) portrayed a Hispanic
character, José Jimenez, on that and many other shows
(including 17 appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show) over the next decade.
He took the Jimenez character to his own TV show, The Bill Dana Show
(1963-1965). His record, "José the Astronaut"
proved popular with the real astronauts. The first words spoken to an American
in space (from Deke Slayton to Alan Shepard) were, "OK, José, you're on your way." Although Dana stopped performing as
Jimenez in 1970, believing the character might offend ethnic sensitivities, he
received an Image Award in 1997 from the National Hispanic Media
Coalition. Dana has continued to write and perform. His Emmy-winning
episode of All in the Family, "Sammy David Jr. Visits Archie Bunker",
ranks #12 on the TV Guide list of top 100 TV episodes. He had a
recurring role on The Golden Girls (1988-1991). Fine condition.
