BILL DICKEY and YOGI BERRA
Black and white publicity photograph of the two catchers shaking hands in the dugout
Photograph signed: "Bill Dickey" and "Yogi Berra", both in blue felt tip, b/w, 8x10. The premier catcher of the late 1930s and early 1940s, the left-handed-hitting BILL DICKEY (1907-1993) was the soul of the Yankee dynasty bridging the Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Joe DiMaggio eras as a player and the Mickey Mantle era as a coach. A key performer for the Yankees on eight American League pennant-winners and seven World Series championships, the Baseball Hall of Famer hit .313 over his 17-year career. Dickey was a Yankee coach from 1947-1957. Through hard work and the help of Bill Dickey, YOGI BERRA (1925-2015) became a great catcher. He led the American League in games caught and chances accepted eight times and led the league in double plays six times. Berra is one of only four catchers to ever field 1.000 in a season (1958), and between July 28, 1957 and May 10, 1959, Berra set major league records by catching in 148 consecutive games and accepting 950 chances without making an error. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972. Berra was named the Yankees' manager for the 1964 season. The day after the Series ended, the Yankees fired him. Berra took over as the Mets' manager in 1972 and led them to the NL pennant in 1973, joining Joe McCarthy as the second manager to win pennants in both leagues. Slightly creased at blank margins and corners, light black mark at upper left corner. Minor surface stains (not evident head on). Otherwise, fine condition.
