BILL GALLO. First Day Cover signed: "Bill Gallo", 6½x3¾. FDC honoring the Circus, 29-cent Elephant stamp affixed, postmarked Washington, DC, April 6, 1993, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Background imprinted on verso. Bill Gallo, one of America's best-known sports cartoonists, has drawn over 14,000 sports cartoons over his over four decades (from 1960) with the New York "Daily News". Gallo, who joined the paper as a copy boy in 1941, served in WWII before returning to the "Daily News" as an apprentice in the art department. Known for creating such characters as "Basement Bertha" and "Yuchie" as well as for portraying well-known sports figures, Gallo has won the National Cartoonist Society's Reuben Award ten times. Also a respected journalist, he received the James J. Walker and A.J. Liebling Awards for his boxing columns and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2001. Lightly creased.
