BILL TOOMEY. Photograph signed: "Bill Toomey". B/w, 10x8. Bill Toomey, born William Anthony Toomey in 1939, was the 1968 Olympic Decathlon Champion and still holds the Pentathlon world record. At the XIX Olympiad, held in Mexico City, Toomey set Olympic records for Decathlon total points (8193), Decathlon 400 meters (45.6, an unbroken record) and Decathlon highest first day score (4526). Over his career, he was awarded the Sullivan Award (1969) as the nation's outstanding amateur athlete, won 23 No. 1 Decathlon titles and six No. 1 pentathlon titles and set the (unbroken) record for most consecutive AAU Pentathlon titles (five), setting new American records in 1961 and 1964. Toomey, who later became a broadcast personality, lecturer and developer and promoter of health supplements, has also served as a member of the President's Commission on Olympic Sports (1976-1978) and the Board of Directors of the U.S. Olympic Committee and co-founded the World Olympian Association.
