BILL WERBER
B/w publicity photo of Bill Werber swinging away, signed with his "Best regards". Werber was Duke University's first basketball All-American and, until 2009, the oldest living New York Yankee.
Photograph signed: "Best regards/Bill Werber". B/w, 8x9¾ overall, 7½x9¼ image, one surface. Werber (1908-2009, born in Berwyn, Maryland) was Duke University's first All-American basketball player (Class of 1930) before signing with the New York Yankees. While with the Yanks he formed a bridge foursome with Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Bill Dickey. Traded to the Boston Red Sox, he led the league in stolen bases in 1934, 1935 and (with the A's) 1937. A hustler, Werber once stole second base on a walk while the opposing catcher argued with the umpire. Traded to the Cincinnati Reds, he pumped enthusiasm into that squad, which went on to win pennants in 1939 and 1940. On August 26, 1939, he became the first player to come to bat on television, leading off for the Reds against the Brooklyn Dodgers. Werber was also the oldest surviving New York Yankee until his death on Jan. 22, 2009. Fine condition.
