Credited with establishing the first successful women's professional tennis tour

to earn $100,000 in one year (1971). In 1973, 29-year-old King beat
55-year-old Bobby Riggs 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 in the nationally televised "Battle
of the Sexes" to win $100,000 at the Astrodome, spurring new interest in
tennis. In 1965, she married Larry King, with whom she founded the unique
World Team Tennis, which has a co-ed format that King calls "the future". A
member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame and the National
Women's Hall of Fame, King led the U.S. team to a gold medal sweep at the 1996
