BILLIE MOVIE CAST: PATTY DUKE and JIM BACKUS
The actors signed this black and white publicity still from their movie Billie
Printed Photograph Inscribed and Signed: "Good wishes to/ John/ from/ Patty Duke Astin" and "To John/ Best Regards/ Jim Backus". B/w, 8x10 overall, image 9½x6¾ (one surface). UA Showcase 6 publicity photo for the film Billie, in which BACKUS plays the father of the tomboyish DUKE. Appearing in her first film at age eight (I'll Cry Tomorrow, 1955), PATTY DUKE (1946-2016) earned an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker (1962). Seventeen years after this award-winning performance, she portrayed Anne Sullivan in a TV movie remake. As the star of The Patty Duke Show (1963-1966), she portrayed identical twins. Other film credits include Billie (1965), Me, Natalie (1969), and Willy/Milly (1986). Her son Sean Astin is also an actor; he famously portrayed Sam Gamgee in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Duke was the first female president of the Screen Actors Guild (1985-1988). Over the course of her long and celebrated career, she won an Oscar, two Golden Globes, and three Emmys. JIM BACKUS (1913-1989) played millionaire Thurston Howell III on the TV sitcom Gilligan's Island (1964-1967) and its sequels.  He also played James Dean's father in the film Rebel Without a Cause (1955) and was for many years the voice of the animated cartoon character Mr. Magoo. Purple "haloing" around Duke's inscription and signature. Lightly creased, not at signatures. Otherwise, fine condition.
