Appearing in her first film at age eight (I'll Cry Tomorrow, 1955), PATTY DUKE (1946-2016) earned an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker (1962). Seventeen years after this award-winning performance, she portrayed Anne Sullivan in a TV movie remake. As the star of The Patty Duke Show (1963-1966), she portrayed identical twins. Other film credits include Billie (1965), Me, Natalie (1969), and Willy/Milly (1986). Her son Sean Astin is also an actor; he famously portrayed Sam Gamgee in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Duke was the first female president of the Screen Actors Guild (1985-1988). Over the course of her long and celebrated career, she won an Oscar, two Golden Globes, and three Emmys. JIM BACKUS (1913-1989) played millionaire Thurston Howell III on the TV sitcom Gilligan's Island (1964-1967) and its sequels.  He also played James Dean's father in the film Rebel Without a Cause (1955) and was for many years the voice of the animated cartoon character Mr. Magoo.
