BILLY JOEL. Record Cover signed: "Billy Joel". Color, 7x7. Cover of his 45 RPM record, "You're Only Human (Second Wind)" and "Surprises", produced by Phil Ramone. © 1985 CBS Inc. A popular singer/songwriter since the 1970s, Billy Joel has racked up an impressive string of multi-platinum albums and hit singles. His first album for Columbia, Piano Man, peaked at number 27 on the charts, but the title track became a Top 40 hit single. The album that propelled him to superstardom, The Stranger, was released in 1977, and included the Top 40 singles "She's Always a Woman" and "Just the Way You Are", which won Record of the Year and Song of the Year at the 1979 Grammys. Joel's subsequent early albums included 52nd Street (Grammy for Album of the Year, 1980), Glass Houses (Grammy for Best Rock Vocal Performance, Male in 1981), Songs in the Attic and Innocent Man, which included his hit singles "My Life", "Honesty", "It's Still Rock 'N' Roll to Me" (a #1 hit), "Don't Ask Me Why", "She's Got a Way", "Uptown Girl" and "Tell Her About It". Joel returned to the top of the charts in the summer of 1993 with his River of Dreams album and has remained a successful concert attraction. He performed "New York State of Mind" at the benefit concert for the victims of 9/11 (2001).
