BILLY and BOBBY MAUCH
The twins are shown looking over their shoulders at the camera. This 14x11 image is from the famous collection of Warner Bros. executive "Doc" Salomon.
Photograph signed: "To Franklin/Best wishes always/Billy Mauch", "To Franklin/Sincere best wishes/Bobby Mauch". B/w, 13½x10½, hard stock. Identical twins BILLY and BOBBY MAUCH broke into films in the late 1930s. Billy (1921-2006) played the youthful version of Anthony Adverse, with his brother as stand-in. The twins were cast together in the following year in The Prince and the Pauper. Billy and Bobby served together in the Pacific in World War II, and were cast in the Broadway and movie versions of Winged Victory (1943). Bobby retired from films, but Billy appeared in several more, including the Ronald Reagan vehicle Bedtime for Bonzo. He then worked for the studios as a sound effects man and dialogue editor. Among his sound effects were the car chase in Bullitt and the sound of the ants in Them. Although not inscribed to A. M. "Doc" Salomon, this photo was part of his collection. Salomon, a friend of studio mogul Jack Warner who rose to head the London branch of Warner Bros. studios, compiled an extensive collection of celebrity autographs during his nearly 30 years with the studio. A V-1 rocket demolished his London studio in July 1944 and killed Salomon, but his photo collection miraculously survived. Edges and corners lightly worn. Lightly toned. Unknown stains on verso. Printing defects near left edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
