Austrian-born screenwriter and director Billy Wilder (1906-2002) won Academy
Awards for Best Director and Best Screenplay for The Lost Weekend
(1946), Best Screenplay for Sunset Blvd. (1951) and Best
Director, Best Screenplay and Best Picture for The Apartment (1961).
He was also nominated for Oscars for Best Screenplay for Ninotchka
(1939, his first nomination), Hold Back the Dawn (1941), Double
Indemnity (1944), A Foreign Affair (1948), Sabrina (1954) and
The Fortune Cookie (1966), Best Original Story for Ball of Fire
(1941), Best Adapted Screenplay for Some Like It Hot (1959) and Best
Director for Double Indemnity, Sunset Boulevard, Stalag 17
(1953), Sabrina and Witness for the Prosecution (1957). Wilder and
his work were recognized with the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award in
1987, the year after he had won a Lifetime Achievement Award from the
American Film Institute. Fine condition.
