THE BIRDS MOVIE CAST: TIPPI HEDREN and ROD TAYLOR The two stars of the film that was nominated for an Oscar signed this laser disc cover Laser Disc cover signed: "[drawn bird]/Tippi Hedren/[drawn bird]" and "Rod Taylor", 12¼x12¼. Laser disc not included. Hedren has drawn three birds near her signature. Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 terrifying tale, based on a short story by Daphne du Maurier, starred Hedren as Melanie Daniels and Taylor as Mitch Brenner. It was Man vs. Nature as birds perched on the trees of Bodega Bay, California staged acts of bloody revenge on humans. Actress and model Tippi Hedren, born Nathalie Kay Hedren in 1930, made her movie debut with an uncredited appearance in 1950's The Petty Girl, then went back to modeling until director Alfred Hitchcock saw her in a television commercial. Hitchcock wanted Hedren to become the new Grace Kelly, an actress who starred in three of his movies in the 1950s. Hedren starred in Hitchcock's The Birds (1963) and Marnie (1964), but after the latter was received with mixed reviews Hedren's career slowed down. The actress claimed that Hitchcock was possessive, controlling, and made inappropriate demands of her not just professionally but personally. Because her contract was under the complete control of Hitchcock, he had the power to turn down parts on Hedren's behalf. She hardly worked for two years, although she did get paid under contract during this time. These allegations of Hitchcock making Hedren his personal actress, even forcing her to wear certain clothes and eat certain foods, have been refuted and supported by various people who worked with the two professionals on The Birds and Marnie. She went on to appear alongside Charlie Chaplin in A Countess from Hong Kong (1967) and even made a cameo in another "Birds" film: The Birds II: Land's End (1994). Other notable films she can been in include I Heart Huckabees (2004) and I Woke Up Early the Day I Died (1998). Rod Taylor (1930-2015) made his film debut in the Australian film The Stuart Exposition (1951) and his Hollywood debut in The Virgin Queen (1955). His long list of feature films includes Giant (1956), Separate Tables (1958), The Time Machine (1960), and The Birds and A Gathering of Eagles (both 1963). Taylor also appeared in a number of television movies and several series, including Hong Kong (1961), The Oregon Trail (1975), and Outlaws (1986). He starred in the Australian comedy Welcome to Woop Woop (1997), and, in his final screen role, played Winston Churchill in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds (2009). Lightly worn at corners. Otherwise, fine condition.
