Lirico". Regarded as the finest Wagnerian soprano of her time, BIRGIT NILSSON
(b.1918) made her debut at the Royal Opera in Stockholm in 1946. In 1956, she made her
American debut with the San Francisco Opera, and in 1959, debuted at the
Metropolitan Opera in New York as Isolde in Wagner's Tristan und Isolde. That same
year, Nilsson debuted at Bayreuth as Elsa in Lonengrin, returning there regularly until 1970 in
the roles of Isolde, Sieglinde and Brünnhilde. Also known for her performances as Elektra
and Salome, Nilsson retired from the stage in 1984. German soprano RUTH HESSE
(1936-2024) sang with the Deutsche Opera in Berlin for 26 years, beginning in 1962. She
also appeared in Bayreuth (1963-1965), at Covent Garden (1969) and in Buenos Aires
(1979), playing the Nurse in Die Frau ohne Schatten at the latter two venues. Hungarian
soprano EVA MARTON, who has slated performances through 2005, is equally at home with
the Italian repertoire of Verdi and Puccinni and German roles in Wagner and Strauss works.
Marton, who made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1976, has also
performed with the Frankfort Opera, the Vienna State Opera, the Hamburg State Opera and
the San Francisco Opera and at La Scala, the Bayreuth Festival and the Salzburg
Festival. Mezzo-soprano NATI MISTRAL has performed both opera and popular music,
appeared with theater companies in Mexico and sang on a number of recordings. UTE
VINZING (born in 1936) made her debut as Marenka in Bartered Bride (1967) and has also
appeared as Dyer's wife and Brünnhilde. Mezzo-soprano MARGARITA ZIMMERMAN
has recorded Berlioz' in L'Infance du Christ. RUTH VELTING has sung Strauss, Massenet,
Humperdinck and Delibes. Lightly soiled at blank margins, touching some signatures (all legible),
