Autograph letter signed: "C.T. Longley", in black ink, 1 page (1 blank page, 2 pages total), 4¼x7. England, June 30, 1862. On black bordered paper, to "My dear Auchdone", in full: "As I am off to Osborne this morning, I am afraid I cannot immediately return your visit. But it would give us all much pleasure if you could come and take a guest dinner with us on Wednesday at half past seven. Believe me-Yours most sincerely",. Charles Longley (1794-1868), a bishop in the Church of England, was installed as the Archbishop of Canterbury in September of 1862, remaining until his death in October of 1868. He was responsible for the first Pan-Anglican conference of British colonial and foreign bishops in 1867. A writer and former headmaster of Harrow School, he published numerous sermons and addresses. Slightly toned. Creased. Attached typed caption at lower margin of blank page. Pencil notes (unknown hand) at top margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
