The Nobel Prize-winning poet (1903) signs a handwritten note to American photographer Alfred Stieglitz in 1894, concerning translations of a German fairy tale.
ANS: "Bjornson" on verso of German postal card, 5½x3½. Paris, 1894 November 20. Addressed on verso (unknown hand) to Mr. Alfred Stieglitz, Berlin, Germany. In German, fully translated: "I don't know an English translation of "Hulda". Arne has a great deal of English translations; at present I only remember R. B. Andersen's (Houghton's in Boston). Sincerely". BJORNSTJERNE BJORNSON (1832-1910), a novelist and dramatist as well as a poet, received the 1903 Nobel Prize in Literature "as a tribute to his noble, magnificent and versatile poetry, which has always been distinguished by both the freshness of its inspiration and the rare purity of its spirit." His poem, Yes, We Love This Land, became the Norwegian National Anthem. "Hulda" is a German fairy tale known as "Frau Holle" in Germany. Collected from oral tradition by the brothers Grimm). American photographer ALFRED STIEGLITZ (1864-1946) had gone to Germany to study in 1881 and took his first photographs in Berlin two years later. Noted for his efforts to have photography recognized as an art form, Stieglitz was married to artist Georgia O'Keeffe from 1924 until his death. Soiled, ink smudged at some words. Worn at upper blank corners, lower right blank corner torn off. Postmark near but not touching signature. Verso is lightly soiled and worn, paper loss at lower right touches 1 letter of writing.
