BOAKE CARTER
Signature from the anti-Roosevelt radio personality, matted with a famous ad of his for Lucky Strike Cigarettes to an overall size of 8x10¼
Signature: "Boake Carter", in black ink, 5x3 matted with an unsigned magazine photograph to an overall size of 8x10¼. Not matted in Gallery of History style. Harold Thomas Henry "Boake" Carter (1903-1944) was born in Baku, Russia (now Azerbaijan), the son of a British oil company employee. After service in the Royal Air Force, he came to the US in 1921. Pursuing a journalistic career, Carter became a Philadelphia radio broadcaster in 1930, and a narrator of Hearst-Metrotone newsreels in 1931. He gained national fame covering the Lindbergh baby kidnapping and murder trial, and his broadcasts became a national feature of CBS-Radio. Carter was a severe critic of the domestic and foreign policies of President Franklin Roosevelt. By 1938, FDR had pressured sponsors into dropping Carter. By 1938, he was no longer a regular broadcaster, but still a popular touring speaker. He joined the "British Israelite" movement, which claimed the British Royal Family to be direct lineal descendants of King David, and died under mysterious circumstances. Signature toned and lightly soiled. Slight creases. Corners of matt slightly worn and creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
