BOB GRIMES
An angered fan writes to John Willis, Editor of Theatre World,
explaining how infuriated he is that the cover of his latest Theatre World does
not match the rest and how his collection is ruined
Typed letter signed: "Bob Grimes", in black ink, 1 page (front
and verso), 5x8. In full: "Dear Sir: My book store called a couple of
weeks ago to tell me my two copies of THEATRE WORLD were in (I always pick up a
copy for a friend, we both have complete sets). I was a couple of weeks late
picking them up and when I arrived in the store I looked on the will call shelf
and they weren't there. I was afraid they had sold them and I would have to
order them again. Then by chance I took another look and my eyes picked up on
two books that looked alike. When I took them off the shelf I nearly died. A
cheap looking picture on the cover not even from a new show but one fifteen
years old. (I don't care about revivals, the show is still fifteen years old).
Change! CHANGE! CHANGE!!! What is this thing that things have to be changed all
the time. I hate it. And after 33 volumes of THEATRE WORLD this is certainly
going to ruin my set. You must have somebody new working there that feels they
have to assert themselves. Well tell them to place go assert themselves
somewhere else an in some other way. I hate it and think it's the crudiest
things I've ever seen. And that's a world I've never used in print before. If
you continue this way with THEATRE WORLD and SCREEN WORLD then you can count on
four less sales a year. It's bad enough that the shows are so awful and I don't
devour the books the way I used to. I hate to break up a set but you've already
broken up the lovely design they made on my book shelves. No Thanks to you!"
Post script: "P.S. Excuse the errors in typing but I'm on vacation and using
a borrowed type writer. I felt I just couldn*t get on with my vacation and enjoy
it until I got this letter out of the way." Bob Grimes (1922-2011)
was a music enthusiast and sheet music collector. Originally earning
an interest in sheet music after failing to learn the piano, Grimes collected
sheet music over his long life span, selling it to a foundation shortly before
his death, and passing away in 2011 at the age of 89. John A. Willis
(1916-2010), active in Theatre World from the beginning, became its chief
editor in 1965, holding that position until 2008. Willis is regarded as one
of the foremost theatre and film historians of the 20th century. While producing
(and presenting) the annual Theatre World Awards, Willis also served on the
nominating committee for the Tony Awards. Theatre World, which
received its own Tony for Excellence in Theatre in 2001, continues
under chief editor Ben Hodges. Corners lightly worn and creased. Light surface
creases. Slightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
