BOB HASTINGS and JACK E. LEONARD
Both have signed opposite sides of this album leaf, with Hastings adding an inscription
Inscribed Signature: "Hi Ursula/ Bob Hastings" and on verso"Jack E/ Leonard" both in blue ink, 5x3½. BOB HASTINGS (1925-2014) was a radio comedian before he moved to TV in the 1950s. After a recurring role as an army lieutenant on The Phil Silvers' Show (1955-1959), he began playing navy lieutenant and yes-man Elroy Carpenter on Ernest Borgnine's McHale's Navy (1962-1966). A couple of the other recurring roles occupied by Hastings include Captain Ramsey on General Hospital in 1981 and bar owner Tommy Kelsey on All in the Family from 1971 to 1976. He has also done many voiceovers for animated series and commercials. Additionally, Hastings was a popular guest at old-time radio fan conventions. Nightclub and television comedian JACK E. LEONARD (1911-1973), born Leonard Lebitsky, was a master of the art of insult, often opening his act with: "Good evening, opponents." Leonard, known for his trademark panama straw hat and horn-rimmed glasses, was a frequent guest on The Ed Sullivan Show and was one of Frank Sinatra's favorite comedians (Leonard later co-starred on the same bill with Frank Sinatra, Jr.). The "Borscht belt" comedian also appeared in the feature films Three Sailors and a Girl (1953), The Disorderly Orderly (1964), and The Fat Spy (1966). Ink notes in an unknown hand identifying signatures: Hastings: Lt. Carpenter of McHale's Navy, Sept. 2, 1968; Leonard: Sept. 6, 1968, Las Vegas. Left edge frayed from binding. Lightly toned around edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
