In full: "Dear Shirley Spencer, Inasmuch as I failed three times in penmanship in college, I can only hope that you can read this well enough to find my best wishes for a happy 1941-1942. Cordially". Lightly toned and creased. Light discoloration at top edge (does not touch signature). Paper clip impression and rust stains in top left corner. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition. Accompanied by: Unsigned bust photo of Hawks. Pencil notations in unknown hand on verso. B/w, 8x10 overall, 7½x9¼ image, printed on cardstock. Photo by Maurice Seymour of Chicago.Lightly toned, soiled, cracked, creased and bowed. Missing top right corner. Paper clip impression in top left corner. Rounded and worn corners. Otherwise in fine conditions. Hawk was an American radio quiz show host from the 1930s until the 1950s. He's probably best known his association with Camel cigarettes and for the shows Thanks to the Yanks (1942-1944) - in which contestants answered questions, not for prizes, but for Camel cigarettes to be shipped to American soldiers - and The Bob Hawk Show (1945-1953), which crowned its winners as "Lemacs" ("Camel" spelled backward). His earlier efforts, like Foolish Questions and Fun Quiz (both 1936), helped set the pattern for man-on-the-street interview shows.
