HELSINKI, FINLAND/July 19 Through August 3". Statics for Mathias' Gold Medal
in the Men's Decathlon. Second page, which is not signed, notes that this is
an "excerpt from 'The Complete Book of the Olympics' by David Wallechinsky".
Robert Bruce "Bob" Mathias (1930-2006) won Olympic gold medals in the
decathlon in 1948 (at age 17) and 1952. As a fullback for Stanford
University's football team, he became the only man ever to compete in a Rose
Bowl and the Olympic Games in the same year (1952). As spokesperson for
Wheaties he boosted the cereal's image as "the breakfast of champions". A
Republican, Mathias represented California in the U.S. Congress for four
terms (1967-1975). Slightly creased. Staple holes at upper left blank corners.
