Cover story: "Bob Montgomery, Philadelphia Star, Claimant to World Lightweight
Title." Boxer "Bobcat" Bob Montgomery (1919-1998) turned pro in 1938. In
1943, he defeated Beau Jack for the world lightweight boxing title. Jack
reclaimed the crown in a rematch later that year, but Montgomery took it back in
their third fight in 1944. The boxers clashed again in Madison Square Garden
later that year, fighting this time not for a title but to promote war bonds.
They raised $35 million. Montgomery retired in 1950 with a record of
75-19-3, winning 38 of his bouts by knockout. He entered the International
Boxing Hall of Fame in 1995. Fine condition.
