COUNTRYWIDE TRADITION CHAMPIONSHIP
A white flag from a Countrywide Tradition tournament held in Arizona bearing 29 signatures, including golfers Bob Murphy, Frank Conner, Walter Hall, Terry Dill, and Jim Ahern. Extremely rare!
Flag signed: "Jim Ahern", "Bob Murphy", "Walter/Hall", "Terry Dill", "Bob Gilder", "Mark Hayes", "Frank Conner", "Tom Shaw", "Mike Smith", in felt tip, 19½x13½. Signer "Bill Brusk" merits more research, with 19 unidentified. 29 total. The Tradition is one of five major championships of the Champions Tour, with it's inaugural event being held in 1989. It is one of the few U.S. based majors that is not recognized by the European Seniors Tour. BOB MURPHY (b. 1943), who turned pro in 1967, had five PGA Tour victories and racked up 11 Champions Tour wins as well as two international victories and five additional wins, including the 1965 U.S. Amateur Championship. Also a member of the 1975 Ryder Cup team, Murphy has also served as a sports analyst for both NBC and ESPN. FRANK CONNER (b. 1946) is one of only two men to have played in the U.S. Open in both tennis and golf (Ellsworth Vines is the other). Conner, who had a tennis singles record of 55-17, began playing golf at the age of 24. He turned pro in 1972 and joined the PGA tour in 1975. He won two tournaments, the 1982 King Hassan Open in Morocco and the 1988 Deposit Guaranty Golf Classic, and finished second four times before joining the Senior PGA Tour (1995), on which he has also finished second four times. Slightly toned. Some signatures bled into fabric, but legible. Threads fraying on left edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
