Robert Thirsk (b. 1953) has achieved many space firsts, including most time logged in space by a Canadian (204 days), first Canadian to fly on the Russian spacecraft Soyuz, first human to file a news story from space, and the first to receive an honorary degree while in orbit (from the University of Calgary). The multi-talented Thirsk, a mechanical engineer, medical doctor, MBA and Russian linguist, also conducted life and gravity experiments on the 1996 Space Lab mission of the shuttle Columbia.
