"THE SHOT HEARD ROUND THE WORLD"
Bobby Thomson, 8 Giant teammates, and opposing pitcher Branca sign a photo of the celebration.
Photograph signed: "Bobby Thomson", "Ralph Branca", "Monte/Irvin", "Willie/Mays", "Eddy Stanky", "Dan Williams", "Sal Maglie", "Leo Durocher, "Larry Jansen" and "Wes Westrum". B/w, 10x8. Captioned in lower margin. For baseball fans, "the shot heard round the world" signifies not just the battle at Concord bridge, but also the climax of the 1951 National League Pennant race. The New York Giants had won 37 of their last 44 games, including their last seven, to force the Brooklyn Dodgers into a 3-game postseason playoff for the right to face the New York Yankees in the World Series. BOBBY THOMSON's (1923-2010) dramatic home run in the bottom of the ninth inning capped the Giants' victory in the final game. Shown here celebrating are jubilant Giant players SAL MAGLIE (New York's starting pitcher), MONTE IRVIN (who had scored on a Thomson sacrifice fly in the 7th inning), WILLIE MAYS (rookie and future superstar, who had been waiting to bat after Thomson), DON WILLIAMS, LARRY JANSEN, EDDY STANKY and WES WESTRUM and manager LEO DUROCHER. The only Dodger signer is the hapless relief pitcher RALPH BRANCA, who had also given up a game-losing homer to Thomson in game one of the playoffs. Branca and Thomson later became close friends, appearing together at many baseball events over the years. By the way, the Giants lost the World Series to the Yankees in 6 games. Lightly creased at corners. Fine condition.
