BOBBY THOMSON Envelope commemorating Bobby Thomson and Ralph Branca from the 1951 National League Pennant, with a 2¼x2¾ color fabric illustration of both. Signed by Thomson, who hit the "shot heard 'round the world" that won the New York Giants the pennant that year. Commemorative envelope signed "Bobby Thomson" in blue ink on illlustration. 6¼x3½ envelope with a 2¼x2¾ color fabric illustration affixed. Gold-colored border around illustration. Titled in black ink: "Bobby Thomson-Ralph Branca/'The Shot'". Postmarked New York City, Oct. 3, 1991. One 29-cent American flag stamp affixed. Thomson (1923-2010), hit what is perhaps the most famous home run in baseball history. His dramatic "shot heard 'round the world" on Oct. 3, 1951, a three-run, ninth-inning homer off Brooklyn pitcher Ralph Branca, capped the Giants' historic comeback to win the National League pennant (and compelled radio announcer Russ Hodges to give the equally famous call "The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant!"). Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1923, the Staten Island Scot hit 24 or more homers six times in his seven full seasons with the Giants. Thomson had a comeback season for the Cubs in 1958, when he hit 21 homers and collected 82 RBI while batting .283. In 1969, Thomson was named to the Giants' all-time outfield. Envelope is open and empty. Lightly toned and soiled. Siganture has bled lightly but is legible. Otherwise in fine condition.
