The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is home to the one of sport's great events, the "Indy
500", held annually over Memorial Day weekend since 1911. This sheet, on which the
collector has noted the signing dates (May 10, 1978 for most of the big names on the front
side), as well as each driver's racing team, and engine. The list includes 5 winners of the race,
four of them multiple winners, so it covers 10 wins in all. BOBBY UNSER (1934-2021)
won the event 3 times, spanning three decades (1969, 1975, 1981). His brother, Al Unser,
won the race 4 times! He was the first driver to average more than 190 miles per hour on the
course. JOHNNY RUTHERFORD (b. 1938) was another 3-time winner (1974, 1976,
1980). After leaving Formula One racing, Rutherford had more success as a stock car racer.
GORDON JOHNCOCK (b. 1937) won the race twice, in 1973 and 1982. Johncock ranks
thirteenth on the all-time list of laps completed in the Indy 500. Until 1989, no foreign
entrant had ever won the Indy 500. That is now a frequent outcome. In fact, the most recent
US victory (through 2011) was in 1996. In 1999 he was inducted into the International
Motor Sports Hall of Fame and in 2002 he was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of
Fame of America. ARIE LUYENDYK (born in the Netherlands in 1953) exemplifies the
Indy 500's status as a world event, winning the race in 1990 and again in 1997. TOM
SNEVA (b. 1948) won the race in 1983, after 3 second place finishes. He has started in pole
position three times. Paper residue on surface - not affecting signatures. Ink notes (unknown
hand) identifying each signature on front and verso. Slightly creased. Otherwise, fine
condition.
