OLIVI 1978 Japanese commemorative envelope honoring the launch of the Japanese sounding rocket S-210 #12, signed by Bock's Car co-pilot Fred Olivi in blue ink in 1983 Commemorative envelope signed "9 Sept. 1983 -/ Lt. Fred J. Olivi/ Co-pilot of 'Bock's car'/ Nagasaki, Japan/ 9 August 1945" in blue ink. 6½x3¾. Japanese and English-language first day cover honoring the 1977 launch of S-210 #12 , a Japanese sounding rocket, from Japan's Kagoshima Space Center with two-color cachet at left. Postmarked "52. 9 15" (possibly Sept. 15, 1978, the 52nd year of Emperor Hirohito's reign). One color Japanese stamp affixed. Commissioned a Second Lieutenant just a year earlier, Fred J. Olivi (1921-2004) was the co-pilot on Bock's Car, the B-29 bomber that dropped the world's second and last atomic bomb used in war on Nagasaki, Japan on Aug. 9, 1945, hastening the end of WWII. Japan officially surrendered on Sept. 2, 1945, V-J Day. Olivi left the military in 1947 and was hired by as a draftsman with the city bridge commission in Chicago, Illinois, rising to manager of bridge operations and maintenance until his retirement in 1986. He also wrote a book on the Nagasaki raid, Decision At Nagasaki: The Mission That Almost Failed (1999). Postmark and cachet touch signature, otherwise in fine condition.
