BOCK'S CAR CREW: CHARLES W. SWEENEY. Commemorative Envelope signed: "Charles Sweeney/Maj Gen. USAF (Ret.)", 6½x3¾. Japanese cover honoring the Tanegashima Base Launch, English and Japanese captions, Japanese stamp affixed, pictorially postmarked. On August 9, 1945, 25-year-old Major Charles W. Sweeney (1919-2004) was the pilot of Bock's Car, the B-29 bomber that dropped the Fat Man atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan. The bombing, which came just three days after the Enola Gay, piloted by Sweeney's close friend, Colonel Paul W. Tibbets, Jr., dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, hastened the end of WWII. Japan surrendered August 15, 1945, V-J Day. Brigadier General Sweeney retired from the military in 1979. Slightly creased at blank areas. Fine condition.
