Autograph Note signed: "John Young" in facsimile with:"& Bonnie J. Dunbar" added, One page, 8½x3½. Place: NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas. Year: 1986. On January 28, 1986, the Challenger space shuttle exploded 73 seconds after the launch of Flight 025 STS 51-L, killing all seven astronauts aboard. This card, bearing the facsimile signature of John Young as Chief of the Astronaut Office, was sent in response to people who sent sympathy cards and letters to NASA: "Gary, The families and friends of the STS 51-L crewmembers gratefully acknowledge your expression of sympathy." Dunbar added, in full: "Gary, Thank you for your note. Yes, the program will continue. We appreciate your thoughts and concern." Bonnie Jeanne Dunbar (b. 1949) is a former NASA Astronaut who served as a mission specialist on Challenger STS-61A in 1985, Columbia STS-32 in 1990 and Atlantis STS-71 in 1995, and was the payload commander on Columbia STS-50 in 1992 and Endeavour STS-89 in 1998. After retiring from NASA in 2005, she served as president and CEO of The Museum of Flight until April 2010. Dr. Dunbar is currently in charge of the new University of Houston's STEM  Center and is also part of the Cullen College of Engineering. She has logged more than 1,208 hours (50 days) in space.
