BONNIE “WEE BONNIE” BAKER and BEN BERNIE
The two talented musicians sign in pencil
Signatures: "Ben Bernie" and "Bonnie Baker", in pencil, 4½x3½. Pint-sized big band singer
BONNIE "WEE BONNIE" BAKER (1918-1990) was the vocalist on the 1939 hit "Oh
Johnny, Oh Johnny, Oh", which earned the Orrin Tucker Orchestra an invitation to the
White House to perform for FDR. Interestingly, Louis Armstrong's fondness for Baker's cute
voice prompted him to recommend the band to Columbia Records. BEN BERNIE led one
of the popular big bands of the 1920s. Ruined financially by the stock market crash of 1929,
he rebounded with a popular radio show in the 1930s. The show featured a mix of "sweet
band" music and comedy, and featured Bernie's signature word, "Yowsah" prominently.
Lightly soiled. Faint moisture stain at right edge touches "e" of "Bernie." Irregularly cut.
Otherwise, fine condition.
