were dethroned as American League pennant winners by the Boston Red Sox in 1975. The
Sox swept the A's in three games, but lost the World Series in 7 Games to the Cincinnati
Reds, "the Big Red Machine", in one of the most exciting topsy-turvy Series ever played.
Games 1 and 2 of the American League playoffs were held at Fenway Park in Boston. This
photo was probably taken as the players lined up for the National Anthem and introductions
before Game 1. Signing here are DARRELL JOHNSON, who managed the Red Sox from
1974 to 1976, and JOHNNY PESKY (1919-2012) former Red Sox player, manager and
announcer, and member of the coaching staff in 1975, and second only to Ted Williams as the
team's most beloved old-timer. Signing Red Sox pitchers are DICK DRAGO, DICK POLE
and JIM BURTON (whose removal from World Series Game 7 in favor of a pinch hitter has
caused Boston fans to second guess Darrell Johnson to this day. Sox second basemen DOUG
GRIFFIN and DENNY DOYLE and outfielder JUAN BENIQUEZ are here, along with
outfielder and clutch pinch hitter BERNIE CARBO. Signing A's include speedy infielder
BERT CAMPANERIS, and pitchers WES STOCK, PAUL LINDBLAD and GLENN
ABBOTT. Former Yankee shortstop and broadcaster TONY KUBEK has also signed.
Slightly worn at corners. Lightly soiled at left of top blank margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
