Boxcar Bertha (1972) was a Roger Corman-produced film directed by Scorsese and based on the life of Depression-era train robber Boxcar Bertha Thomspon. Hershey starred as Thompson and Carradine as union leader Big Bill Shelly. Boxcar Bertha was Scorsese's second feature film as a director and the first to enjoy a wide release. His next film, released the next year in 1973, was Mean Streets, the first of many masterpieces. The most renowned filmmaker of his era, SCORSESE, born in Queens, New York in 1942, virtually defined the state of modern American cinema during the 1970s and '80s. A consummate storyteller and visual stylist who lived and breathed movies, he won fame translating his passion and energy into a brand of filmmaking that crackled with kinetic excitement. In addition to the numerous awards from the Director's Guild of America, Golden Globes and various Film Festivals and Critics Circles, Scorsese won an Oscar for Best Achievement in Directing for The Departed (2006) and has been nominated for an Academy Award six times for Best Director for Raging Bull (1980), The Last Temptation of Christ (1989), Goodfellas (1991), Gangs of New York (2002) and The Aviator (29004) and twice for Best Adapted Screenplay for Goodfellas and The Age of Innocence (1993). HERSHEY, born Barbara Herzstein in Hollywood, California in 1948 and known for a brief period as Barbara Seagull, appeared in many feature films, beginning with With Six You Get Eggroll (1968), but her greatest critical acclaim came later in her career in films such as Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), Hoosiers (1986), Tin Men (1987), The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), Beaches (1988) and Portrait of a Lady (1996), for which she was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award. Hershey, who also acted in television series and films, won an Emmy for her performance in 1990's A Killing in a Small Town and appeared in 1993's Return to Lonesome Dove. The eldest son of actor John Carradine, stage, screen and television actor DAVID CARRADINE, born John Arthur Carradine in Hollywood, California in 1936, is best known as the Chinese-American Shaolin monk Kwai Chang Caine in TV's Kung Fu (1972-1975). He took a strong interest in the Asian martial arts and the philosophy behind them when he began the role and has produced action films, two exercise videos and a book, Spirit of Shaolin, on the subject. Carradine has over 200 movies and TV shows to his credit. He earned critical acclaim for his portrayal of Woody Guthrie in the film Bound for Glory (1976), made his film debut in 1964's Taggart, appeared in such films as Boxcar Bertha (1972), The Long Goodbye (1973), Mean Streets (1973), Death Race 2000 (1975), Gray Lady Down (1977), The Long Riders (1980) and Bird on a Wire (1990), and found success later in his career in the two Kill Bill movies (Vol. 1, 2003; Vol. 2, 2004). Carradine, who also starred in the short-lived TV series Shane (1966) and Kung Fu: The Legend Continues (1993-1997), was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance in the TV miniseries North and South (1985), and he has made guest appearances on a number of TV shows, including recent roles on Alias. He's has also appeared on Broadway and is a producer and director. Lightly scuffed and creased. Light impressions and scuff marks from disc on cover.
