"Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" was written by Irish-born Johnny
Marks, who also penned the holiday songs "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer"
and Jolly Holly Christmas". The song was first recorded by Lee in 1958.
It did not chart on its first release, but became a big hit when it was
re-released in 1960. The song ranks second on Lee's list of best-selling
hits, with over seven million copies sold. Backed by the cream of
Nashville's session musicians, Brenda Lee (born in 1944) burst into the
teen-oriented pop music market in the early 1960s with a series of hits,
including "I'm Sorry", "I Want To Be Wanted", "Break It To Me Gently", "All
Alone Am I" and "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree". Lee, who has 29 gold
records and was nominated for four Grammy Awards, returned to her country
music roots in the 1970s, and continues recording and is a popular attraction on
the tour circuit. "Little Miss Dynamite" was inducted into the Country Music
Hall of Fame in 1997 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. Fine
