BRET HARTE. ALS: "Bret Harte", 1¼p, 4¼x7. Imperial Hotel, Malvern, 1894 September 6. To Dr. Tyrell, in full: "Alas! There doesn't seem to be any room for me in your daughter's ______. Unless I put myself as a postscript to somebody else's letter, I don't see where I can edge in. And what a closer lot of people they are! Perhaps I may have a ______ in her new book. Until then, like Thackeray's hero 'At the Church Path' after his mistress had passed in, I'll 'wait outside of Heaven's Gate and see 'Angels within it'". After gaining popularity early in his career with his short stories set in the American West, Harte's later work was mostly popular with British readers, and he spent his later years in England. Lightly foxed. 2 tape remnants at blank left margin at mid-vertical fold. Overall, fine condition.
