BRIAN AHERNE
Very youthful image in wool scarf, signed for collector Saul Goodman
Photograph signed: "Best wishes/Brian Aherne". Collector's ink stamp on verso dates signature January 21, 1936. Promotional caption affixed states that Aherne "is now playing the male lead with Helen Hayes in her latest starring vehicle, 'What Every Woman Knows.'" British actor Brian Aherne (1902-1986) made his first U.S. appearance on the Broadway stage in The Barrets of Wimpole Street (1931). He starred opposite such leading ladies as Marlene Dietrich, Helen Hayes, Rosalind Russell and Merle Oberon and received an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of doomed Emperor Maximillian in Juarez (1939). He played The Saint Simon Templar on radio in the 1940s. Aherne was married to actress Joan Fontaine from 1939 to 1945. Saul Goodman (1919-2003), a New York business man by day, pursued his love of film and theatre in the evening, making friends with many celebrities. While other autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen. A few light bends, with a slightly more noticeable vertical crease affecting a single letter of signature and sentiment. Otherwise, fine condition.
