First day cover honoring the sport of tennis (1874-1974). Postmarked Forest Hills, New York, August 31, 1974. 10¢ stamp affixed, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Brian Gottfried (b. 1952) was an American professional tennis player. Gottfried attended Trinity University in Texas and was selected as an All-American in 1971 and 1972. Shortly after graduating, Gottfield began playing as a professional. Throughout his playing career, he took home 25 singles titles and 54 doubles titles. In 1977, he was ranked 3rd in the world. Lightly toned. Faint vertical crease touches “d” of “Gottfried”. Pencil note in an unknown hand on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
