BRIAN O'LEARY
First Day Cover for the Viking Landing on the Mission to Mars, signed
by O'Leary in purple felt tip
First Day Cover signed: "Brian O'Leary", 6½x3½. First Day
Cover commemorating the Viking Missons to Mars, 15-cent stamp affixed,
postmarked Hampton, VA, July 20, 1978, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. American
scientist Brian O'Leary (1940-2011) was selected by NASA in 1967,
being chosen as a member of the sixth group of astronauts selected that year. He
was one of eleven scientists selected for the (eventually canceled) Apollo
Applications Program, and was the first astronaut to be selected for a
potential manned Mars Mission. The mission, which was projected for the
1980's, never came to fruition. O'Leary left NASA only a year later, and went
on to a teaching career at several prestigious universities. In recent
years, O'Leary has drifted away from orthodox science, and has studied more
controversial ideas, like the relation between "consciousness and science".
Corners lightly worn and creased. Slight surface creases. Slightly soiled on
verso. Edges slightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
