Philatelic Envelope signed: "B. O. Davis/Brig. Gen U S A", 6¼x3½. Commemorating the
progress of transportation, 3-cent U.S. stamp affixed that is postmarked; typed
address to collector in Chicago. Benjamin Oliver Davis Sr. became the first black
general in the U.S. Army upon his promotion to Brigadier General in October 1940.
During World War II, Davis travelled throughout Europe as an advisor on race
relations in the Army; he tirelessly promoted the desegregation of American armed forces.
Davis had joined the service in 1898 after the outbreak of the Spanish-American War
and attained the rank of Major by the time the U.S. entered World War I. He completed
his distinguished 50-year military career on July 20, 1948, when President Harry S.
Truman presided over his official retirement ceremony in the White House. Fine
condition. Framed to an overall size of 21x17.
