GENERAL CHARLES FREDERICK MANDERSON and MOSES EDWIN CLAPP
Slip of paper signed and dated by U. S. Senators Charles Frederick Manderson in 1898 and Moses Edwin Clapp in 1902. Manderson was brevetted a brigadier general during the American Civil War, while Clapp was Minnesota's Attorney General.
Signatures: "Charles F.Manderson/Nebraska/Dec 23rd 1898" and "Moses E Clapp/Jan 22 1902/St.Paul/Minn.". Black ink notations in top right corner on Manderson's side. 6½x2, rounded top right corner. Pennsylvania-born lawyer MANDERSON (1837-1911) was a Republican U. S. Senator from Nebraska (1883-1893). During the American Civil War, Manderson raised a company of Ohio volunteers and served in the Army of the Cumberland. His service included the Battle of Shiloh (April 6 and 7, 1862) and the Battle of Lovejoy's Station (Aug. 20, 1864), where he was so severely wounded that he had to resign his commission in 1865. Manderson rose to the rank of colonel and was brevetted a brigadier general. He was also a delegate to the Nebraska state constitutional convention in 1871 and 1875. CLAPP (1851-1929) was Minnesota Attorney General (1887-1893) before being elected Republican U. S. Senator from Minnesota (1901-1917). He was also attorney for St. Croix County, Minnesota (1878-80) and a Minnesota Delegate to the 1904 Republican National Convention, as well as a co-founder of the St. Paul College of Law, now the William Mitchell College of Law. Lightly toned. Show-through touches both signatures. Clapp's signature is lightly smeared but legible. Notation touches Manderson's signature. Ink stain touches Clapp's signature. Neatly torn from binding at left edge. Irregular bottom edge. Otherwise in fine condition.
