Manuscript letter signed "Chas F. Manderson". 1 page, 7¾x9¾, U. S. Senate Ruled stationery, three binder holes at left edge. July 31, 1888. Addressed to James S. Lehmaier, Esq. New York City. In full: "Dear Sir:- Your favor of 28th inst is received. Accept my thanks for your kindness. Truly yours.". JAMES S. LEHMAIER was Chairman of the Committee for the New York Republican Club. Pennsylvania-born lawyer CHARLES FREDERICK MANDERSON (1837-1911) was a Republican U. S. Senator from Nebraska (1883-1893). During the American Civil War, Manderson raised a company of Ohio volunteers and served in the Army of the Cumberland. His service included the Battle of Shiloh (April 6 and 7, 1862) and the Battle of Lovejoy's Station (Aug. 20, 1864), where he was so severely wounded that he had to resign his commission in 1865. Manderson rose to the rank of colonel and was brevetted a brigadier general. He was also a delegate to the Nebraska state constitutional convention in 1871 and 1875. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Date, but not signature, is lightly smeared but legible. Folded in half horizontally and twice vertically. Otherwise in fine condition.
