CHARLES H. TOMPKINS
As Assistant Quartermaster this future member of the Military Commission which tried the Lincoln conspirators sends invoices to another Assistant Quartermaster.
Manuscript LS: "Chas. H. Tompkins" as Captain, Assistant Quartermaster, U.S. Army, 1p, 7¾x10. Washington, D.C., 1863 August 8. To Capt. P.P. Pitkin, A.Q.M. Vols, Warrenton Junction, Virginia. In full: "Herewith enclosed please find duplicate Invoices and Receipt of Qr. Master's Stores forwarded by order of Gen. Rucker. Please sign the receipts and return them to me at your earliest convenience." Brevet Colonel Charles H. Tompkins (1830-1915), came from a decorated military career, including receiving a medal of honor for killing Captain John Quincy Marr, the first Confederate soldier killed during battle in the Civil War. Following President Lincoln's assassination in April 1865, Tompkins was named by President Johnson as a member of the nine-man military commission to try the conspirators accused of assassinating the President. In 1894, Tompkins voluntarily retired from service, and died 20 years later from sepsis resulting from a broken leg. Separated at blank upper horizontal fold. Now encapsulated. Lightly soiled. Toned. Small tears on folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
