BRIGADIER GENERAL CHARLES P. EGAN - SIGNATURE(S) - HFSID 323849

CHARLES P. EGAN
Signature of the Civil War and Spanish-American War veteran who was convicted and served 6 years imprisonment. A rare signature.
Signature: "Chas P. Egan/Brig. Genl. Army. Genl./US Army", in black ink, 3½x2½. Charles P. Egan (1841-1919) was an officer in the United States Army, fighting in the Civil War and the American War. Egan fought with the 1st Washington Territorial Volunteer Infantry, being commissioned a second lieutenant in 1866, and eventually promoted to Brigadier General in 1898. During an Indian conflict in California in 1873, Egan appeared on a battlefield alongside his men in full uniform to prove the bravery of his company, being wounded but ultimately winning the battle. During the Spanish-American War, Egan was tried by court martial for criticizing fellow officer General Nelson A. Miles during an investigation into supplies given to units during the war. He was found guilty, and suspended from rank and service for six years. However, after the six years had passed, Egan immediately retired from service. Slightly soiled. Adhesive residue on verso (no show through). Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
