CHARLES KING. ALS: "Charles King", 1p, 5x8. Milwaukee, 1900 January 2. To Miss Harriet B. Stapleton, Philadelphia. In full: "I am honored by your proposition to see my name among the list of members of the Betsy Ross Flag Association. I remember the old house well and sincerely wish you success in your most laudable effort." Slightly shaded. Mounting remnants at corners of verso show through. Overall, fine condition. With a postmarked, stamped addressed envelope in King's hand. Torn top edge, pencil notes (no show through, unknown hand) on verso, else fine. Soldier and author Charles King was engaged on frontier duty from 1874-1877 and was severely wounded at Sunset Pass, Arizona Territory, in 1874. Captain King wrote Famous and Decisive Battles (1884), Marion's Faith (1885) and The Deserter (1887). The "old house" mentioned in this letter was rented by Betsy Ross and her husband John, an upholsterer, from 1773-1786. In 1898, a fund-raising effort was started to restore the time-worn building at 239 Arch Street in Philadelphia. Today, over 250,000 visitors tour the House annually. Two items.
