Philadlphia & New York" Confederate General Clement H.Stevens, aseaman and banker before the Civil War, enteredConfederate service asAide-de-Camp to General Barnard Bee, his brother-in-law. Heinvented a land battery that was enclosed in railroad iron and erected on Morris Island. He was severely wounded at 1st Manassas (Bull Run) and Chickamauga. While leading the brigade in the Battle of Peach Tree Creek, General Stevens wasmortally wounded and died on July 25, 1864. This bank note was issued during the period when the country had no centralized banking system (1833-63), and thus no regulations of currency. As a result, state banks issued their own currency such as offered here. A scarce signature in any form. Light stains, torn at edges, tanned, minor tape repairs on verso. Signature is dark and clear.
