DAVID LEE "TEX" HILL
The former Flying Tiger types this letter to an admirer, requesting that he provide him with modest compensation if he would like Hill to sign his photographs
Typed Lettersigned: "'Tex' Hill" in blue ink, 1p, 5x3. No place, no date. "Dear Ryan". In full: "I recently received your letter asking me to sign several photographs along with other Flying Tigers. And I sincerely appreciate your interest in me and the Flying Tigers. However, whenever I sign my name to any item, I know that I add value to that item. You may not be aware, but I make my living signing books and military memorabilia at air shows and similar events. I normally receive at least $10.00 for each of my signatures, sometimes more depending upon the items signed. While you sent me an envelope with return postage, you didn't send anything for my signatures. If you want me to sign your items, please send me a check for at least $60.00 by August 31. I hope that you can appreciate my position on this matter./ Sincerely". David Lee "Tex" Hill (1915-2007),a former U.S. Navy dive-bomber pilot, replaced Jack Newkirk as Commander of the 2nd Squadron ("Panda Bears") of the Flying Tigers in March of 1942. He accumulated 18¼ confirmed victories and was noted for his hit and run tactics. Hill was one of only five Flying Tigers who was inducted into the U.S. Army after the group was disbanded in July. Given the rank of Major, Hill commanded the 75th Fighter Squadron and served as Commander of the 23rd Fighter Group while on his second combat tour in China. After the war, he rose to the rank of General in the Texas Air National Guard. Corners and edges worn. Crease toward lower left-hand corner from paper being folded over.
