Governor of Ohio and American Civil War General Edward Follansbee Noyes wrote this letter in Cincinnati in 1881, saying that he couldn't write an essay for a Library Club as requested.
Autograph letter signed "Edward F. Noyes.". 2 pages, 5x8, 1 sheet, front and verso, ruled paper. Cincinnati, Ohio, Oct. 24, 1881. Addressed to Alexander Hill, Esq. In full: "My Dear Sir - In answer to your polite note of the 18th inst I am sorry to say that it will be impossible for me to comply with your request for an Essay before the Library Club Dec. 17th. Before that time I am obliged to leave for the East, to be gone for several weeks, and I can not [illegible] I could be here Dec. 17th. And in any event I shall be [illegible] that I shall not have time to prepare an Essay. At some other time I will try to do so if it is desired - With many thanks to the Board & Management - I am, Yours very sincerely,". Noyes (1832-1890) helped to organize the 39th Ohio Infantry, a volunteer regiment, during the American Civil War. He was commissioned the regiment's first major and, after a few months, its colonel. Noyes had his left leg amputated during the Battle of Ruff's Mill (July 3 and July 4, 1864). He was later Republican Governor of Ohio (1872-1874) and U. S. Minister to France (1877-1881). Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Tape remnants on page 2 with show-through, which touch body of letter but not signature. Lightly discolored at top edge of page 1, which touches date but not signature. Random ink stains. Neatly torn from notebook or pad at left edge. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
