FRANCIS MARION COCKRELL
Signature of Confederate Army Brigadier General and United States Senator Francis Marion Cockrell, clipped from the closing of a letter on ruled paper
Autograph sentiment signed: "Your friend/F. M. Cockrell". Pencil notations on verso in unknown hand. 5¾x1½ ruled paper. Cockrell (1834-1915) served in the Confederate Army and was appointed Brigadier General in 1863. He was wounded five times and was captured three times, the last at Fort Blakeley, Alabama, on April 9, 1865, the day Lee surrendered. On May 14, 1865, he was paroled. Cockrell represented Missouri in the U.S. Senate from 1875 to 1905, serving as Democratic Minority Leader from 1903 to 1905. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Light nicks at bottom and left edges. Irregular top edge. Folded once and unfolded. Otherwise, fine condition.
